may 23rd

the best part of niigata in the springtime
is driving through the rice fields
in summer, the rice fields are covered in rice stalks
and in autumn, they are bare after the harvest
and in winter, they are fields of snow and ice
but in spring
just after the rice is planted
and there is an inch or two of water
the rice sprouts up in tiny shoots of green
arranged in perfect rows
and the water isn't deep, but it is glassy
glassy enough to reflect the trees, buildings, mountains, and sky
and driving on tiny two lane roads
with kilometers of rice fields as far as the eye can see on either side
you feel like you are driving through a kingdom of lakes
